About The Tall Ships Races

The Tall Ships Races is by far the largest cultural event for young people, families, and visitors in the Stavanger region – and all activities during the event are free.

Host city for the fifth time

Between 22 and 25 July 2026, Stavanger will for the fifth time be the host city for the international sailing regatta The Tall Ships Races, formerly known as Cutty Sark. Stavanger previously hosted the event in 1997, 2004, 2011, and most recently in 2018. Around 50 magnificent ships with full crews will dock along the entire harbour in Vågen.

Free experiences for the whole family

We can look forward to 1.5 kilometres of free experiences. The festival stretches along Vågen in Stavanger, from the concert hall to the oil museum. During the festival, several of the largest ships will welcome the public on board for a free visit.

In Byparken, Small Ships will be arranged, dedicated to the festival’s youngest participants. You can try building traditional timber‑frame structures together with carpenters, and at Strandkaien you can see how old boats are built and kept alive. When evening comes, the audience can enjoy free concerts from the main stage in the concert amphitheatre.

Local eateries will serve flavours from around the world. Zouq, Yips, and Chili Chocolate are just a few of the stalls you’ll find during the festival. There will also be a dedicated food‑truck festival in Børevigå. The full cultural programme will be launched on June 11.

Young sail trainees

Many young sail trainees will leave their mark on the city during these days. Tall Ships Stavanger is sending around 250 young trainees into this year’s regatta. The regatta is organised by the non‑profit organisation Sail Training International (STI), which has members all over the world. Since 1956, the Tall Ships races have brought together young people aged 15 to 25 across nationality, culture, religion, gender, and social background. At least 50% of the crew on each ship must be within this age group.

Sailing route for 2026

The Tall Ships Races will begin in Aarhus, Denmark, before the ships sail on to Harlingen (the Netherlands), Antwerp (Belgium), Stavanger, and Aalborg (Denmark).

Ambitions for Tall Ships 2026

The Tall Ships Races 2026 in Stavanger will be an event built on the city’s maritime traditions, creating a sense of well‑being for the region’s residents and serving as a strategic initiative that strengthens Stavanger’s reputation as a city of culture and major events.
